Tobin Reed
Mira Osk's childhood friend from the Weir.
Tobin Reed is Mira Osk's childhood friend from The Weir in Port Hallow, who considers himself the one who keeps her out of trouble.
Appearance
Tobin is a head taller than Mira and poor at hiding it in a crowd.
Personality
Cautious and protective, Tobin tries to talk Mira out of risky marks and is quick to see the danger in the compass. He is sceptical of legends, though he grew up on his gran's stories and still repeats them. In a crisis he is resourceful and takes danger with a grin.
Background
Tobin grew up with Mira Osk under the same leaking roof in The Weir. His gran told him the story of Ilith to scare him off the water, and claimed that fish could hear lies.
History
Episode 1 The Brass Thief
Tobin spotted Captain Varr Dane on the Fishmarket Stair and warned Mira not to rob him. When she unwrapped the Brass compass, he called it "a hanging", and later dismissed Ilith as one of his gran's stories while they read the unsigned letter.
Episode 2 The Salt Barge
Tobin boarded the Patience with Mira and recalled his gran's claim that Esk folk can call the tide. When Seren of Esk drained the harbour he went over the stern as the water dropped, but climbed back up the rudder chain and was found at dawn soaked to the waist and grinning. Mira called him an idiot and hugged him so hard he coughed.
Episode 3 What the Water Keeps
Tobin did not appear. As the two compasses swung north toward Port Hallow, the episode stated that the Wardens would hang him at the Gull Gate in six days.
