Ilith
A drowned city of tidecallers, lying under shallow sea south and west of Port Hallow.
Ilith is a drowned city lying under shallow water in the open sea, long told of in coastal stories. An unsigned letter claims the Brass compass knows the way there.
Background
Ilith sank in the Year 412, three hundred years ago by the Council's count. In the story Tobin Reed's gran told, it sank because it was greedy. The telling of Esk is that the city drowned itself: its people, the Ilithi, were all tidecallers, who called the sea in to drown a fleet that came for them, called it too hard, lost everything they remembered, and the sea never went back.
Description
Ilith lies in water impossibly shallow for open sea, which turns the colour of tea above it. From the surface one can see roofs, green copper domes, a bell tower with its bell still hanging, and streets laid out like the lines on a palm. Inside the bell tower is a room the sea has left untouched for three hundred years, holding a writing desk, a chair and a shelf of books gone to pulp.
History in the story
Episode 1 The Brass Thief
Named in the unsigned letter: The compass knows the way to Ilith.
Episode 2 The Salt Barge
As the coast fell away, the Brass compass pointed south and west, toward open sea and, Mira believed, Ilith.
Episode 3 What the Water Keeps
The Patience reached the city on the third day at sea. Mira Osk dove into the bell tower and found a second brass compass on a desk beside a lantern-man's pole bearing the Grey Wardens' silver hook.
